Anyone have a preference for a certain bank? Leaning towards Banco Popular since they have stateside branches. Thanks.

Used Banco Popular for the 9 years we lived on STX. Had no problems. Still have a checking account and credit card with them, three years later.

I use Bank of St. Croix, but, it keep a stateside bank account as well. One never knows! My friends account at Scoia were hacked and they didn't have access for awhile. Good to have a backup! Whichever you choose, if you go off island and need to use your card, better have informed them first.

The best bank is the bank that each of us uses.

Everyone will say that their bank is the best.

Not necessarily. It would be useful to qualify the choices by their strengths.

I've used:

-Banco Pop: decent service, high-ish fees, but interminably long lines. Entering is like going through TSA. I'm no longer a customer.

-Scotia: indifferent service for me as a commercial account; statements had penciled corrections occasionally. I'm no longer a customer.

-Firstbank: easy target for hackers, slow response to hacked users. I'm no longer a customer.

-Bank of St.X: short lines best customer service for a local bank but expensive fees, shifting policies, robbed at gunpoint twice in the last few years. I still maintain two accounts there, but seldom use them any more.

I primarily use USAA which allows me to deposit checks via smartphone, and refunds my atm withdrawl fees each month. Debit card is recognized everywhere except at BoSTX. (grumble). Their customer service is lightning fast and far better than any on-island alternative.

I've used FirstBank for over 20 years, never had a problem of any kind and always friendly service. Even gave me free checks.
