best shipper from Ohio to STX?

This message is mainly for my fellow "buckeyes", but please feel free to chime in with an opinion! We will be moving from Ohio to STX in January, and I'm looking for personal opinions on who is the best shipping company and why. If it matters, we will be shipping 2 vehicles (packed) and probably very little furniture along with clothing, kids' toys and other typical necessities.

Thanks in advance!
Lisa

We will leave Cincinnati soon and drive to Miami and put the cars and stuff on a RORO.

What does towo vehicles packed mean? Cars must be empty as the day it was made or they are not supposed to be shipped though I have heard some have shipped a car with stuff in in and worked out OK. Even if it goes on the boat with stuff in in don't count on to it arrive with said stuff still in the car.

You might want to do a search on this forum site and read some of the car shipping threads - especially the ones about things taken from vehicles and what is allowed.

If you don't mind going to Miami, VI Cargo is the place to go. We moved here from Florida and took our stuff to their warehouse, vehicle to the port and the whole ordeal was painless. Price quoted was price paid, and they cleared customs for us. Great outfit. If you want I will send you a PM with the owners information. No surprises at all.

Thanks, everybody. I was under the impression that you were allowed to fill your vehicles, but maybe I read that wrong. Guess I need to look into it a bit more! We won't be driving anywhere -- just paying a company to take everything from our house here in the Ohio boonies right to STX. Fortunately, because my husband's new employer is paying, cost is not an issue. With all that I have to do here with him already gone, hopefully it's as simple as a phone call!

If you are really expecting this all to be done with a phone call I would suggest you call your husbands employer and follow their directions about how they want to make this happen for you. They may have an expediter on staff who will take over your moving problems. I would also allow 3-6 weeks for your goods to be in transit.

At one point you could pack a car to the window line, but not any more. They have to be empty.

It will not be as simple as a phone call, no matter who is paying -- be prepared.

Hey, DixieChick! We're moving from Logan in the Hocking Hills. Before that we were just outside Croton (near the infamous Buckeye Egg Farm -- YUCK!). I think I'm going to call Managed Freight first, since I've read so many glowing recommendations of them. I also just found out that you can't bring a vehicle with a lien on it, which both of ours have! Just what I need... one more thing to add to my list of pain in the butt things to figure out. 🙁

In years passed, it was common to load a car full of property and ship it. However those days have passed. Due to new regulation and unfettered theft (particularly in PR) shippers no longer allow it.

If you are planning to put your cars in a full container with your other stuff, then I would imagine that you could use that space to load personal property. But I don't know that for sure.

Popflops, thanks for asking the question-we will be leaving the Canton,Ohio area in Feb or March depending on when we get all the loose ends tied up. We are also moving to STX but will be paying for everything ourselves. I also thought we could load the car but then I read a thread that had changed so I was in the process of making calls to shippers to see what they said.
Right on DIXIECHICK- We need to plan a BIG party for all the "Buckeyes"

We're coming for our PMV sometime in the next 2 weeks and will be on island permanently in January. His co-worker's fiancee will be there full-time this month, but I'm not exactly sure when. It's easier for them... no kids, no pets, no house just an apartment... I almost envy them! 🙂

moving here can be confusing to say the least. alot to do espically if you have pets, and kids. but it is worth all the hard work. espically coming a cold climate. isn't croton where the hartford fair takes place???

That's the place. We had a log home outside of Croton, but it was considered a Croton address.

Croton and Hartford are the same place with different names (for some weird reason). It is in Licking County.

Good morning,

popflops, we too are fellow buckeye's and it is amazing how many are on island. But then again it's cold in Ohio. lol.

We have older info as we moved a container (with a vehicle in it) from northern Ohio, memory may be foggy but here goes. It was a few years ago. It really wasn't bad, as far as moving goes. I wrote it out in detail and will PM to you as it is the whole story and a little wordy..

We used Crowley and things went well. We did have to provide a complete inventory of the items packed, the vehicle had NO lien was older, and they handled dropping off the container at our house (it was on its own trailer/wheels) and the trip to St Croix and then to our house.

Good Luck and welcome!
