We are coming down to STT in 6 weeks and my mother will be coming with us, which means we need to be vigilant when it comes to keeping the house insect- and critter-free the best we can. She is paranoid when it comes to anything from nature. However, she's not unrealistic about her expectations in STT. I'm just looking for some pointers that could help minimize the "trauma" of her stay so she has a good time. The last time I was in STJ, I woke up with a scorpion on my chest :o))))))))

It's almost an exercise in futility but there are some things I find are helpful. Any cracks under the doors put a towel in at night. Make sure kids always close the door of course. If you don't mind the smell for a day, use an insect killer where walls and floor boards meet, all of them. As well as any cracks anywhere you see them. Maybe a seek and destroy session before you know mom will be headed back to the room. Make sure you mentally prepare her starting in a couple of weeks, this is the tropics you know. The best thing for me would be to leave her at home and maybe take her on that ski trip to Colorado instead, no bugs ever up there. Hope this helps, but prepare for shrill cries at any given moment. Oh, and always check the shower stall really good, for some reason bugs love the shower stall. Good luck!

Whats wrong with the obvious answer of having it sprayed. Its only about $40 for a largish house.

Yep. A reputable company shouldnt use any sprays that are harmful to people or pets. We had two rental houses before we bought and we paid for Termenix at both. I'd much rather have my house sprayed and go out to eat one less time a month, wouldnt give that up for anything.
