Also, if you are dead set (pun intended) on commuting via bike, please arrive with adequate health care insurance or a rich uncle who can pay the medical bills.

I have nothing against bike riders. The only ones I have a problem with are the ones who force me to either follow them at a snails pace or dangerously pass them because they refuse to ride tandem. If I saw a bicyclist get hit in a hit and run because of their stupidity, I would stop to help but it would be hard to turn in the driver if the bike caused the accident.

I love liberal situational ethics. Evade responsibility if it's not your fault. It used to be when people still had morals that in an accident aid would be rendered no matter who was at fault. In most states it is a legal requirement.

If a vehicle hits a bicyclist, you know the driver of the vehicle would be found at fault. Why should he/she suffer if the bike caused the accident because they are in the middle of the road?

Uttica, you are right. By law, bikes must obey the same traffic laws as motorized vehicles. If the bicyclist was the one failing to give proper right of way, it would be the bicyclists fault. But then it's up to the police to determine that and that could be a whole other can of worms.

When in the water surrounded by alligators it's a little late to check the water temp. If you witness an accident and continue to go with helping the injured that makes you a loser.

To Poorthang (and Bass): the only reason to go through pockets would be to look for a donor card or next of kin. Neither one am I qualified for so I am not sure where your comments are coming from. I would render aid to the best of my ability. I just would not want to see a driver hung up in suit courts because some lawyer saw dollar signs. I would testify that the bicycler was the cause of the accident.

To Lizard: huh?

Uttica,
A hit and run accident is against the law, You are so worried about a court case sometime in the future maybe you should just keep going down the road. Oh and the water temp doesn't matter at the time, when surrounded by alligators and a future court case for a hit and run shouldn't matter at the time either, when the bicyclist needs help. I Hope this clears up your huh?

Actually when I said selfish I meant that anyone who would take up bike riding knowing it's just a matter of when the if is selfish to the poor people driving. I have NO desire to hurt or kill anyone but frankly I don't see how an accident can be avoided on the roads in the islands. Even going 25 to 35, coming around one of our many blind curves you are going to end up very hurt or dead.

I wish they would put in sidewalks and bike routes but come on it's the usvi, it's probably not ever going to happen. People build their houses and gates right up to the road not paying attention to set back laws. It would be a night for an efficient govt to get something going let alone the VI.

Not all of us are gas guzzling fiends either. I have a hybrid. I would love to be able to walk to places I need to go but that just not realistic. We recycle as much as you can here and garden (and attempt not to kill it) etc... To pigeon hole people with cars is lame. As much rain as we have, children, jobs, etc it's just not realistic, unless our society did a 180. You want a good biker community try Arizona. Beautiful country and tons of bike lines with strict laws protecting bikers.

To anybody who chooses to risk running over a bicyclist because you have the right of way, you risk committing vehicular homicide. Please wait until it's safe to pass. But if the bicyclist does something stupid AND you could do nothing to avoid hitting them, that's another story.

It is usually the "blue haired ladys" or the old man with a hat that are notorious for cuttin me off.

just to be clear, I'm not pigeon-holing any drivers. But I find it very rude that you think that my biking is selfish because it inconveniences you as a driver. I don't ride double abreast, I don't ride in the middle of the road, and I follow traffic rules. The only inconvenience to you is you may have to wait 30 seconds to pass me if we are going around a corner or something. If I'm going uphill and I'm slow, then pass me. If I'm going downhill, I can easily go 25-35 mph. If you think accidents are unavoidable going around corners, it sounds like you may need to slow down around them a bit -- from all my driving in the Colorado I know this is an issue with even cars traveling in opposite directions, which is why so many people there honk to notify others of their presence. All I want to do is ride my bike as safely as possible. It is inconvenient for me that my graduate stipend is barely big enough to cover tuition and maybe rent but certainly not a car.. I just don't have the money for many other options as a financially independent, very poor student. I certainly don't car if you drive, it is probably the fastest option for most people (and the least sweaty haha) but as a safe and law-abiding cyclist I don't see what the problem is.
