Since I will be in STT for a few weeks without my car I was wondering if anyone has or knows of a person/place where I can get a cheap used bike? My ideal bike would be one of those old bikes with fat tires and (maybe I'm pushing it) a basket. Thanks again...

Juni,
You don't see too many people on bikes - I can't recall seeing the kind you are asking about here. The roads are sometimes a little scary in a car. Add a little rain, a little darkness and you are asking for trouble. I will look through the island trader tomorrow and let you know if there is one around but odds, honestly, are not good. $1 taxis are pretty easy to get around on to most of the locations except, of course, the hotels you want to get too. Anyway, will check and let you know tomorrow.
Pamela.

As a long time serious cyclist having ridden more than 4000 miles each year for several years before moving here, I would urge you in the strongest way to reconsider riding here. The roads are very curvy, very hilly, very narrow, and there is no culture of riding here, so the drivers have no expectation of you being around the next bend. RIDING ON THE ROADS HERE WOULD BE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS!!

I would confirm what stt says.

I ride 5,000 miles a year, but I wouldn't risk my life riding on St Thomas or St Johns. Riding on St Croix is OK, but it is a lost of work with the hills and you have to be very, very cautious.

Coming Down,

If I were to ride at all (which I won't) I guess it probably would be around the University//Brewers Bay area. There is somewhat less traffic. Still not the best idea in the world.

Also, you may want to consider your strength//ability and the geography. It is very hilly in places here. There are places around the university where you might only live 1-2 miles away, but the climb would be several hundred feet. If you aren't up to that, its a moot point.
