Birthing Centers?

Hi Everyone,

I have been reading your postings and am so glad that I was able to find this message board. It is wonderful to have such a wealth of knowledge in one location.

I am moving to STT with my boyfriend and we are coming down for a pre-move vist in June. I am pregnant and have been searching for birthing centers or midwives on the island. I had planned on having a natural childbirth and we were very excited about having a water birth (laboring and giving birth in water) but I have yet to find any other options to the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital.

I was just hoping that someone might know of some alternative birthing sites or know of some nurse midwife or doctors who might be open to water births. Also if you have any advice about me having my baby on-island. Perhaps I should give birth off-island and then return with my new bundle of joy.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi Jaybird,
I am moving to STT in August. I am in Missouri currently. My pediatrician (here in Missouri) has a brother that lives in Tortola. His wife is pregnant and says that she is giving birth in San Juan. They were very satisfied with the hospital and doctors in San Juan. Although, from what I understand, if you don't speak Spanish or are uncomfortable in San Juan you can obtain insurance to fly you to Florida. So a stranger on a message board's pediatrician's brother's wife is giving birth in San Juan. Did that help or what?!? 😉 Actually, I would be interested in what everyone else says. I have a four month old and we could possibly have another in the future. Please share any info you come across. Good luck with everything!

LOL! Actually it does help. What kind of insurance would fly me to Miami? Is that part of a health insurance package or something else. I am very interested because the birthing center I was interested in (with the water birth and everything) is in Miami.

Be careful with the med evac insurance- usually it will take you to the nearest place that a procedure is offered. If you are having a baby, I can't imagine they would send you to Miami. I could be wrong.
