Hi,
I've been offered a great job on the island of St Croix. I'm coming from Maine. I have read that it is a pain to bring a car to the island and have been concidering bringing a new bmw f650gs or a used r1100gs. Both are valued about $6000. Is the procedure for registration, etc etc the same for motorcycles as it is for cars? Also how is the riding in St Croix? Keep in mind that both bikes are designed for rough pavement and dirt so thats not an issue.

The roads are often atrocious, particularly after a heavy rain when the potholes are full of water - you don't know what's pavement and what is a whole big enough to throw St. John into. And "dirt road" takes on a whole new meaning here - we are talking gullies and washout...seriously bad.

Use the search feature at the top and just put in "motorcycle" - much has been written. It boils down to most people think it's a cruddy idea. If it isn't the roads, it's the other drivers. Nope, these islands ain't no place for a 'cycle...it's another one of those things you have to be here to understand, but only the very brave of heart undertake a ride here.

THanks for the info. I did a search and all I can find is information for people riding road bikes. The bike I'll be bringing is an on/off road bike that actually just went from London to NY the long way driven by Euan Mcgregor(obi-wan, star wars) in the documentary "long way round"

I just need info on the import laws/cost of these bikes to bring over as well as any ride reports.

All I know about cars is, if it's foreign, you get to pay more - I don't know about MC.

Call Lee Fleming with Managed Freight 888-820-8475 or contact him at expeditor@managedfreight.com Betcha he can give you a guess.

Adam,
As a biker that has been to STX let me say that the best bike for the island has to be nimble and able to go anywhere. Top speed is wasted. Your 650 (single?) would work well. Of my stable, ifi had to pick only one, I'd take my Honda XR 350. It's licenced for the street and is geared to do over 70 but still go anywhere. It's more than adequate for dirt roads on STX. There are a few bikes on island. I've seen just about every thing from street rods to duel sport.

Bassman,
thanks for the info. The 650 is what I'm concidering, light nimble and designed for dirt and pavement.

Hello any and everyone...

My husband and I are in the process of relocating to St. Thomas (he's there, I'm on my way!). We want to purchase a vehicle on the island, but we are not sure of which dealerships are available. Any help with names/websites/phone numbers for dealerships would be greatly appreciated. I would also be interested in any used cars that might be available for purchase from private parties.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Geri

Hi Geri.

All of the auto dealerships and their contact information is listed here:

http://www.viphonebook.com/

For used cars from private parties, since your husband is on island he can check the Island Trader, a free paper that comes out on Thursdays.
