I wll be moving permanently to St. Thomas before the end of January, and will be bringing with me some gold coins and nuggets my Father left me. Is there any problem getting material like this through the airlines security and customs as far as you know?

Max -

I read in the handbook that said if you have things you are willing to part with for a week or 2, and wont break, (and i havent seen a coin break yet) to send it thrugh the snail mail. They are not searchable the book said.

We did send a coin collection with our 7-9 household boxes by USPS. The coins were dispersed throughout the boxes and came through fine. But if I had gold, depending on the amount, I think I'd pack it in my suitcases (in sox etc.) and just take my chances. It has been our experience that Customs gets involved in USVI travel only when US citizens travel BACK to the continent from the USVI. On the way to the VIs only regular security checks are made.

Welcome!

I agree with Linda, if they are treasured items either personally and or monetarily then carry them on you/with you. You won't pass through customs coming to the USVI from the US mainland just regular security scanners. You might want to call your local airport and check - if you have a large amount they might question you about it, no harm in confirming that its ok.
