Good Afternoon,

Ok, so I am moving in 47 days and here is what I have planned on as far as expenses. I wanted to run this past the people that have made the move to make sure I am not forgetting any "hidden expenses".

Shipping Car $2000.00 (after taxes and the rest)
Apartment $2400.00 ($800 apartment, first & last months rent + security deposit)
Airfare $500.00 (one way from Florida / two people)
Hotel $250.00 ($45.00 a night for five days, while we find our apartment)
Incidentals $2000.00 (spending money, while we look for jobs)

total $7150.00

Is this number high or low, and is there anyway to make it lower? I am trying to be realistic, but is my budget way to high. Can we do this move for less? PLEASE!!! 🙂

It depends on which island. That's about what we spent on STX. The $2000 for incidentals will go for deposits on utilities and cable and such. Even if you get a furnished apartment, you will still need to buy some furniture type stuff. We bought a hutch, a tv and a stereo. It adds up quick. I'd like to tell you it will be a lot cheaper, but it won't.

What hotel for $45/night? That seems low to me.

I don't know if you can swing it, but with a move like this, I'd take whatever you think you're gonna need and double it.

Having more time and energy to spend finding the right place and/or right job instead of wasting it on worrying about running out of funds and just taking something out of desperation could end up costing you more in the long run.

I think that sounds fine... do you have extra money that you don't have in your budget but you have saved just in case? Look for work right away, spend in your means, don't go out partying until you have a job that can support the entertainment part of living there, try to find a small comfortable apartment around the price you named a bit lower if you are willing to get an efficiency or small one bedroom (Not much lower maybe around $700) but definately look around to find good prices, call lots of places listed in the Island Trader and do it right away in order to minimize number of nights you need to be in a hotel. If you are going to buy lots of furniture right away you are going to eat through your incidents $$.

All the best with your move, look forward to hearing how its going once you get here.
