Can some one recommend any mason person/people that are good and reliable but not too expensive, even better if it is someone that I can work with it. I will be building a masonry garage with wood roof , so definitely going to need help with a good mason . I am trying to cut some corners to have a realistic budget. I was told that for a house is calculated to be about $200 sq ft.. If that is true a 24 x24 garage will cost me $ 115.000 . That is crazy..... Also any architect that do nice job, trying to design a front entrance like an octagonal .
Thank you Jorge

Sounds like you need a contractor.
Wait until you are here, have your stuff and are settled in to your new home. You can then take the information you have and call around for quotes (not estimates) and meet the people you will be dealing with to have all the work done as well as see the work they have done previously for references. Rome wasn't built in a day and things in the VI cost more and take longer.

Maybe a stupid question but why do you want a garage? Very few people here have them but many have simple carports.

I don't know much the island , but in case of a storm I imagine the car in the garage will be safe and the one in the carport probably done the hill. Also we thinking to build an apartment upstairs for my friend and use the garage as my work shop. Many different uses.

Any storm or flooding strong enough to blow your car down the hill would also be strong enough to cause significant damage to your garage. Our truck rode out several hurricanes on our hill outside just fine - strongest was Omar, a category 2/3.

However I can totally understand wanting the workshop/apartment. 🙂

Julie , So you were in Omar went it happen and truck was fine parking outside? Wow that is good to know , I saw some many photos showing the damage that I am trying to prevent it. But definitely I need an apartment, plus will increase the value of the house.

Yes, ours was fine in Omar, and we had a tornado take out half of our property during Omar - fortunately not the half with the house! It's really hard to pinpoint what damage will happen during a hurricane though - things you think will be just fine sometimes get destroyed, and vice versa.

An apartment can increase the value of your house, but I wouldn't count on anything increasing your home value in the current real estate market. You should build it because you want it and you can use it and you will enjoy it, not because of any perceived increase in value.

I've been through two major hurricanes on STT - Hugo in '89 and Marilyn in '95 and the outside-parked cars I had were just fine during both, as have been other cars during much lesser hurricanes over the years. In Marilyn the main roof of the (very well built) house flew off along with several sheets of the T-111 along with half of the master bedroom exterior wall. The solid garden shed was picked up and simply disappeared (inside shelving, some tools and the washing machine which had been inside were found way down the hill) - but my car sitting out in the driveway was fine. Lost everything I had basically and had no power for 6 months but was able to get behind the wheel!
