Building permits for add-ons or remodels

The wealth of info on this site is amazing.

After renting for a while I plan on using my VA loan to buy a home.

How is the building permit process? Is it like the US?

I want to have a house with a small rental unit for family/friends and renters. If the house I buy doesn't have one I have no problem building one.

Just want to know about keeping it legal.

Thanks.

Check the zoning of your lot 1st.

You're welcome.
Indeed, check what your zoning will or will not allow.
You have to have a 15 ft. setback from road, property line, etc., I believe, for residential areas so best to do your homework.
Good luck.
