buying a vehicle

Hi all,
I have yet another question... 🙂
In your opinion, is it more recommended to ship your own car or buy a used one on the island? Which would prove cheaper? I know it will be about $800 to ship my car and then the money on top of it to register it. I am thinking of bringing my subaru car (its all wheel drive, will that be sufficient?) Or should I opt to buy a suv down there?
What are the best places to go an get a used car? Are there used car dealerships? Can anyone recommend a particular dealership....or is anyone selling there "in not so bad of condition" car??? 🙂 Sorry, it's worth a try!
Thanks for the info!
Brooke

This question is on everyone's mind when they move here. Just a few posts ago the number $1200 was mentioned to get a car into the USVI. I think that is accurate and even if you can do slightly better is a good target. So, when you look at the cost of driving a dependable car you must consider the cost of buying an "island car" that might have rust and island use problems. It also will be higher priced than state side blue book prices. Some people wonder if they should have an"all wheel or 4 wheel drive" car. My answer is.. "it is not necessary" tourists like 4 wheel drive on st john, but if you learn how to drive it is not necessary, particularly on St Croix or St Thomas. Subaru's are great cars. If it is paid for ,it will cost you much less than buying a car here.
