How complicated and expensive is the process of registering a car that is purchased on the island (STX)? Ive read that after 3 months, you are supposed to get a USVI driver's license but before that you can use your stateside license. Is this true? Can I register a car with a stateside license. How expensive is insurance? And, how hard will it be to sell the car when I leave in a year??

Thanks for the help!!

You can use your stateside drivers license to drive here. You are "supposed to" obtain a VI drivers license within 90 days after living here, but I know some people went longer before getting a VI drivers license. When you get your VI drivers license they will take away your stateside drivers license; been there done that. It's not that complicated-- go to VI Bureau of Motor Vehicles, fill out a form, have your picture taken & you're back out the door.

Insurance here is not with any stateside insurance company. Basically all on island insurance company policies are underwritten by Lloyds of London. When we 1st moved here it was total sticker shock on the yearly premium -like a $100/mo for used small car. Comprehensive is the most expensive at 2-3x vs just having liability coverage. We finally switched over to AARP (Real Legacy out of Puerto Rico) but if you qualify as a military veteran, etc, USAA also has more reasonable rates than other on island insurance companies. Finally I don't think it's that hard to sell a vehicle if you want to move back to the states.

Sorry forgot to mention that both my wife & I registered cars with our Ohio driver's license several months before we obtained VI drivers license.
