I was planning on moving to USVI and wanted to spend the summer just camping somewhere by myself. Does this sound totally unreasonable? I am a 20 year old female so safety is a huge issue for me. any ideas? Thanks, hailey

Hello Hailey,

If you are going to pay at a campground to camp like at Cinnamon Bay on St. John or Mt. Victory on St. Croix sure thats an Ok idea. If you plan to camp on beaches then its not a good idea for safety reasons as you mentioned.

I saw in another post you were interested in St. Croix. The Parks and Recreation Dept. doesn't allow camping on a few beaches there; the ones that are known turtle breathing beaches, otherwise camping on beaches is at your own risk.

What was your plan for camping?

what I am really trying to do is save money on paying to rent somewhere, plus I just wanted to be outside of populated areas for a while. For my trip I planned on pretty much bringing a backpack and that's all, just a trip that is as simple as possibe for a few months. Thanks for your help. hailey

Hello Hailey,

You could certainly experience what you described if you camped at Mt. Victory. It is a beautiful eco-accomodation on St. Croix. They have a neat property, when I last visited they didn't yet have baresites set up but they might have them now, so you could look into renting a baresite and bringing your own tent. You would need to figure out something for transportation as its sort of far from town. Their web site is
http://www.mtvictorycamp.com/ You would have to pay to camp there, not sure of the cost.

If you are interested in St. John, try calling Maho Bay Campground. They have a very fun work-share program there. You work for about 20 hours a week (or that's what it used to be) for free room and board ... neat place.
