I called the us embassy and they said that I could get a working visa no problem if an employer is willing to sponsor me

Hello Stephane,

Thats correct, you need an employer to sponsor you and that is where the tough part comes into play. Unless your job skill is something the employer can't fill locally/US then they aren't likely to go that route. Also sponsorship involves paperwork that some employers just don't want to bother with.

What type of job would you be looking for?

My next door neighbor was an acupunturist and she ended up with a job as a SCUBA diver. Not a big demand for that here.

The rules are the same for canadians as they are for me (a Brit).
the chances of finding a sponsorable position down here are slim to none. the cost of a work/permit/green card etc is prohibitive and the time line is loooooong. The US is just like everywhere else - US citizens first. i have no problem with that, but, hey, that could be because I got lucky and got my green card years ago. Sorry to be a squelcher but the Immigration laws are very strict and the other posters are spot on when they say it is too much trouble for all but the largest firms.
