car repairs

Are car repairs--such as something as simple as brake replacement much more expensive on the island--because, if you don't repair your own car, where would you go. Is there competition with each other--between mechanics. My brakes are half gone, and I was wondering whether to get them replaced before I transported my car over, or, would it be the same to get it done there?
Thanks.

I was referring to St. Croix.

I have never had any work done on a car in STX, but here in STT the places like Midas are usually busy and they are slightly higher than in the States. And there are local mechanic places(not chains) that do a great job for a little less than chains, but stillmore than in the States. I'd just have it done here.
