My husband is a skilled carpenter (from Egypt). Are they in demand there on the islands of St Croix or St Thomas?

Skilled carpenters are always in demand here regardless of their ethnicity - as long as they're eligible to work in the US.

Not true at least on STT/STJ Finding skilled carpenters here for finish work and custom cabinetry isn't an easy task. Finding someone to bang together 2Xs (and stick in a shim when the cutting measurements are off) is easy but the skilled craftsmen are hard to find and in high demand.

Thank you. And yes, when he comes he will be eligible to work. He will be arriving on the I-130 visa.

It sounds like to me, he would also work out great as a handyman. If I were him, I would check out places like hotels and Condo groupings like Blue Beards Castle and such. I worked there about 45 years ago back when it was a hotel.

I asked for both because there are private schools on both that I could work at. I have read that St Croix is cheaper to live on but that matters nothing if my husband can't find a job. I will go to which ever island we can afford and both work.

Yes, St. Croix is cheaper to live as far as rent goes, but might be harder to find work there. St. Thomas has more people, more homes and moves at a bit of a faster pace if that can be said about any Island:-)

STX and STT have approximately the same population, and so I assume the same number of houses. I'd guess STT has more carpentry opportunities than STX due to higher commercial activity. But I think a skilled carpenter will be in demand on either island. You just need a little patience and perseverance in the first few months as you build up your reputation and word-of-mouth marketing.

Skilled craftsman are in high demand in St. Croix. Everyone is looking for skilled craftsman but nobody wants to pay for their skill. Expect many job offers but it will be low pay and little or no benefits. Cheap labor isn't skilled and skilled labor isn't cheap.

A good friend of mine was a skilled carpenter on STX. He recently left island. He was in high demand, with more work than he could handle. There are people willing to pay for good work.

Probably better off going on your own if you can get a good customer based on word of mouth which could take awhile. My experience is you'll interview with company after company and they will go on and on what a great resume you have. Then they will go on and on how it's so hard to find skilled people here. After they make their offer you'll have a laugh and then realize that there isn't a lack of skilled labor there is a lack of people willing to pay for skilled labor. Better off being a bar tender or beach attendant.
