Does anyone know what cellular phone company works the best in the islands? I would hope both companies have towers on all the islands but I bet I am wrong...Thanks - KatieB

My Cingular works as good in STX as it does in the states. However thats not saying a lot. LOL
I switched to Cingular when we got our place there, because we were told that Verizon didn't work there.
I do like the fact that there is no roaming or long distance charges.

I was wondering about Cingular's nationwide no roaming no long distance. Can you call the states from the island with no additional charges??

Most definitely, I call the states just about everyday with no added charges. In theory, your phone should work the moment you get off the plane. In my case this wasn't true until about 3 hours after I got off my plane because they have been doing upgrades to the system here on STT. Service is so/so. The concrete buildings do horrible things to reception but for the most part if I'm outside I'm able to make calls. Overall, I'm very happy with Cingular.

I am a cingular user. It has worked just fine for me. I had verizon before I left the states. I had to let it go becasue of the roaming charges. I too call home every night and on weekends, during peak hours with no extra charge. I think alot of people use sprint here becase they can go mobile to mobile at no extra charge.

We recently switched to Cingular and had no problems calling from STX to the states...we also enjoy the free unlimited mobile to mobile. We have the nationwide plan and the USVI and PR is included in their calling area. They have more of the calling area "maps" on the website.

I know that Sprint wasn't on your list of providers, but I'm on STT and have very few problems with coverage.

The only problem I have is my apartment is roaming with Sprint, and with my plan, for every minute of roaming I use, I have to use a minute of regular minutes... so with my 500 min plan, I can get 250 min of reg calls and 250 min of roaming without additional charges.

I call stateside nightly with no additional fees. I kept my stateside phone #, so all my stateside friends don't have to worry about international rates on their end.

A call to the USVI should not be charged international rates. With most telephone companies, if you have unlimited long distance on your calling plan, there is no additional charge to call the USVI.

Should not be charged international rates, but I know I was a couple of times.

I had a T-Mobile Cell phone while I was neogtiating my new job and moving expenses and all my calls from Michigan to STT were charged an international rate. T-mobile doesn't (or didn't at the time) cover the USVI.

I had spotty service with Verizon on the west end of STX 2 weeks ago. Yes, it was roaming @ $0.69/min so it was used only when ABSOLUTELY needed. A friend with us used Cinqular every day to call home with no problems.

My son lives on STT and we as family had Verizon, but switch to Cingular. You can get coverage in STT with Verizon sometimes but you will get a roaming charge. I think the Verizon tower is actually on a mountain in Puerto Rico.

With cingular you have to watch your bill. Every now then you may get an international charge. Especially if the call was place in STJ or out on a boat. The phone may lock on to a tower in the BVI. Everytime it has happened I have called cingular and they have credited my bill - No Worries.
