My opinion on Club 54- being a 20 something girl that loved going to clubs and bars in the states - to dance, mingle etc... is that 54 has possibility and clientele... the same people that make Brew Pub and Bongo's stay open also frequent 54 - when they have something worth attending with their awesome space- like Kurt Schindler,etc.. its when it gets "foam parties" that I check out or the gangsta stuff that draws the wrong crowds in. Anyway- yes all the Coast Guard peeps and Hovensa peeps do the "circuit"...start on the boardwalk - at Mix (well, when it was open) and Brew Pub and then head over to Bongo's and 54. And people generally stay in groups and can feel safe. I think I was the most paranoid person when I lived there - but felt fairly safe to mingle this "circuit".. granted there were nights I didnt get a "safe" vibe- but that can happen in daylight at Sunny Isle too! Anyway- I wouldnt put it in the same category as near all the hookers, although only about 2 blocks away. I never go past the post office at night- nearing that red light bar and the hookers... but then again I didnt quite get the understanding of "safe/unsafe" areas on island- such a different concept than in stateside cities Ive lived in. Generally safe areas that reflect it in establishments, real estate, etc... on island though you could have shack next to mansion next to ???

The people that frequent the above mentioned places are a bit different that those down the street, or say at 2 + 2. Much more tourists or locals that are Good Hope or Country Day alumni back from college, Coast Guard or Hovensa transplants. Same ones that would love to frequent Savant or Bacchus...just cant afford to. Or that you will find at Tutu Bene on the first Sat night of the month.

Only thing I never understood- never really a police presence- never the feeling that they were attempting to keep crime minimized. Sure- every once and a while on the boardwalk near Rumrunners at sunset time...but really... that's not where their presence needs to be!?? In the states in the club districts when its happening on Fri and Sat nights - police are there... available!! Not sure where they are at on STX??

I think when 54 does best is when they utilize their space and create good dance nights... you can't dance at Bongo's or Brew Pub really (well not on the lower part) and I think if you are drinking and dancing there is more fun...instead of drinking and "know what" - more drinking and fights. Think that is why Tuttu Benne's is a hit when they do their thing - a little classier than "the bar" with dancing and atmosphere. 54 has the atmosphere and dance potential- with the right managament.

During the day they will sometimes schedule 3 to 6 to do patrol and give out tickets in downtown at night there is rarely more then one or two guys at the station let alone in town. It's rare to see a cop on a normal night out, wish they did have more out.
