Commuting between St John and St Thomas

Hello everyone,

We are considering moving to St John. My husband feels pretty confident that he can find work on St. John. He has some connections in the construction industry there. I am a social worker, Is there much work for social workers? I would prefer to work on St John for the convenience but most of the social work jobs I have seen posted so far are in St. Thomas. I know I could take the Red Hook ferry but is it a real pain in the butt? Is there public transportation from Red Hook that is less expensive than a taxi? We have taken a taxi from Red Hook to various places around St Thomas but I could not afford taxi fare 5 days a week back and forth.

Thanks.

There are social work jobs. You should check with Dept of Labor. You might be able to get something that allows you some time on St John, but it will probably be mostly on St Thomas. I would think Human Services is the department with the most SW opportunities. Are you an MSW? That will definitely improve your chances. Pay is not great, but the government perks are pretty good.

From Red Hook to most government offices, you can take the safari route. If you have to do home visits for a government job, I think they provide transportation.

Sorry I can't help you dmaria724. However I was going to post a similar question of my own. How difficult/annoying is it to take the morning ferry from Red Hook? I know there are a 6:30 and a 7:30. I may be getting a job on STJ but I know it is cheaper to live in STT and also that it will be busier (so I can meet people).

Thanks everyone!

It's really a personal view as to whether the ferry ride is a "pain in the butt". Keep in mind that if you commute from STJ, it's easiest if you live in Cruz Bay and work near the East End of STT. Living on the Coral Bay side and working out by UVI, for example, makes for a very long commute every workday -- adds 30-45 minutes of driving on each side of the 20-minute ferry ride. But some people do it all the time.

The safaris (dollar bus) are the cheap way to get around on STT. They have set routes and don't go anywhere other than those routes - and they go in only one direction around the loop. Keep in mind that they do not run after dark.
