Hi,
I've been offered a great job with the govt down in the USVI and the reason I haven't accepted it yet is because my wife needs a job as well. Currently she makes about 55k per year for the feds and would be willing to take a paycut (40k w advancement opps) in order to come down with me.
Does anyone know about any conservation/environmental/agricultural groups on island that are looking for help?
I'm going to need to take this job either way and would really appreciate it if my loving wife could be with me.

thanks
Adam

Adam,

Sorry to be a bummer, but I have serious doubts that there are many non-profits organizations in the USVI that offer pay of $40k per year . If they do, it's probably only paid to the executive director. And due to the nature of how things work here, is almost always going to be a local or someone who has lived in the USVI long enough to build a strong network of connections.

I applied for the Exec Director of the Amercian Cancer Society office in Honolulu, Hawaii two years ago (the same year we moved here) and the pay for that position was locked at $40k. The wages for Hawaii are very similar to those offered in the USVI (read: low).

There may be opportunities for your wife to work for a coservation group on island, but it's very likely she will need to adjust her expectations regarding pay scale, and possibly quick advancement, downward. YOu can get an overviewof the average wages for a lot of occupations at https://vimovingcenter.com/employment/wages.php While they don't specifically list conservation organizations, you'll see that they pay scales are lower for just about every type of job here than in a lot of places in the continental US.

Check with SEA, St Croix Environmental Association. I know that one of the leaders of it moved off island recently. I do not know if they have any positions open, or if it would pay. They also might be able to lead you in the right direction.

I thought I saw a couple of adds in your field last week. I do not remember if they were in the AVIS or the Daily News. I think I might have the issue from the
Avis. I might have also seen it on Firstgov.net.
