Crime

I am moving to the USVI as of Jan 5th and today called about a job I found .

The call was strange because I wasn't told anything about the job. Just told about the crime on St. Thomas. How I should go to St. John and not St. Thomas.

About drive by shootings. The disparity of the rich and poor. How charolette Amalie wasn't a nice town.

And to call back when I arived.

Seemed a little strange to me. Is crime a big problem in the VI?

Any thoughs would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ian

Hello Ian,

Who were you calling/What type of job?

Crime is a consideration here yes, it exist, a lot of it is drug related as far as murders go and there are domestic situations and burgleries. You might check out the newspaper online and read the police reports to get an idea of day to day activity.

The call back when you arrive is pretty typical... lots of people say they are coming and don't, so managers rather see you in person on island then spend to much time chatting up with you on the phone while you are in the states.

Was this person you spoke to ON St. Jhon? If the job was on STJ, maybe he/she was only trying to sway you into living on STJ so you would want the job? I've lived here for7 years and never had one problem. There is crime here, as there is everywhere, but, if you don't put yourself into the wrong situations, you won't see it. Don't go wandering down any dark alleyways at 2 a.m. in search of drugs, don't leave you video camera on your car seat with the window down, don't leave your wallet on your towel on the beach while you are in the water, etc.

Drive by shootings? This isn't L.A.

Charlotte Amalie isn't nice? No kidding? I wonder why we have over 1 million visitors to the town each year?

The disparity between rich and poor is great here...but so it is on STJ and STX....and the BVI...and St. Martin...and the rest of the Antilles chain.

I dunno...this person doesn't sound like a font of good info to me.

Visited St Thomas in August, Charlotte Amalie is a wonderful town. I had a great time and felt very safe.

About three weeks ago, seven people were shot and killed in broad daylight in Cancun. All in one day. You probably never even heard of it. A few years ago, a man shot and killed 30, yes thirty, tourists with a rifle in Australia...you probably never heard of that either. Those horrible incidents didn't stop tourists from visiting Australia or Cancun, and tourists will flock back to the tsunami-devastated areas in short order, even though tsunami warnings were suppressed because of possible detriment to the tourist industry. Three years ago, airplanes were flown into tall buildings in New York, killing 3,000 people...the tourists keep coming though. But let just one tourist get robbed or mugged in the Virgin Islands, and it's curtains for us.
