Hello there Island folks, well, I havent posted in awhile, some of you may recall my chat name; I told you I would be down in the month of May and, well, here I am, KINDA. I'm currently in San Juan (from Alabama, where I live). I found a great little place in metro SJ in a mix of tourist/residential areas, 450.00/month, incl utilities/cable and it's a great little guesthouse. Can catch the buses east & west along metro SJ 1/2 block in either direction while out scouting for jobs at the major resorts and other tourism areas. IT IS A DIFFERENT WORLD. It's beautiful and different and LOUD and fast and crazy and yes, I love it, but cant wait to rent a car (OUTSIDE of metro SJ - just too crazy for me to try to drive here) - and roam the island edge and countryside for a few days. I AM coming to the Caribbean for a more laid-back lifestyle and slower pace of life and I can tell ya, San Juan AINT that! But because I found this great rental I decided to grab this apt and keep it as a kind of "base" from which I can visit STT and STX., and still have a place here when I fly back out. And of course I knew that SJ was a major metro city. Have met some USVI locals here and they are great people; some are flying through and others have come over for a short vacation or getaway. So I expect to be in your "neck of the woods/sea" next week. My Spanish is not that great and before I came half the people I spoke to here said, Oh, no problem, almost everyone here speaks English also, the others were like, Well, if you plan on looking for jobs here you will need to be bilingual. I am finding both are true and both are false. I guess that's why you just really have to come down and see for yourself. I've had plenty of friends/acquaintances who've traveled to P.R. and the USVI who've told me this and that, just as all of you wonderful islanders have, but it DOES take seeing for yourself. So regardless of the outcome here on P.R., I dont regret a thing and am having a great time. Looking forward to exploring the rest of the island and then coming over to your beautiful islands next. I do see that just like you say, people down here do not take you seriously until you actually "set foot" on island ground. Ha. True, though. I have had several people here surprised that I am actually really here, they too have folks tell them Oh, yes, I am coming and they never hear from them again. So yes, I will be there too. And hey, while I am on the board, although I have sent cover letters and resumes by email and fax prior to this trip, if you DO know of anyone hiring, -resorts-tourism-hospitality- or some places in particular, I'd love the tips. I do have some leads, but welcome any local inside info. The resort for which I was a GM for 6 years in north Ala. sold and I knew if I did not make this trip now while I could, I would forever regret it. Thanks to all. Marc
