Danger Zone?

I am coming over to USVI in March/April '06 and thinking of making the move.

First of all, I’ll be staying on Prindsesse Gade in Charlotte Amalie. A lot of the guide books say Charlotte Amalie is dangerous at night. Can anyone tell me if this is a particularly dangerous spot? And how “dangerous” is defined. For example, is it Kingston Jamaica dangerous, New York City dangerous or just average city dangerous? Are we talking drive by shootings or pickpockets?

I’d also like to know if I really need to rent a car or can I get around without one and how? Are bikes available for rent for instance and are taxis expensive?

And if anyone can give me some advice on what I should see and not see and do and not do while I’m there so that I can get a real feel for the islands and the way of life, meet and chat to local residents and so on, I’d be very grateful.

Best,

Tim

Charlotte Amalie is no more dangerous at night than any other populated area would be. Just because you are on a tropical island doen't mean you shouldn't use common sense - don't walk down dark deserted alleys, don't flash large sums of money, don't wear loads of jewelry and you'll be fine. Using taxis on a regular basis will be expensive and put a strain on anybody's pocketbook. It will be cheaper to rent a car than take taxis everywhere. The roads are narrow, twisty and hilly in many spots and they are very heavily travelled so bicycling is not alway the best option, a lot will depend on how far, where and when you'll be travelling. If you do decide to make the move consider purchasing a reliable used "island" car rather than renting one. Renting long term will cost you more over time.

I live in downtown Charlotte Amalie for the moment so I can give you a little firsthand info about it. Bicycling is not an option- streets are too narrow and drivers too selfish. It is pretty desolate at night, unless you count the waterfront. You have to be aware at all times, maybe more aware, as you would in any other city. That being said, our car has been broken into and/or vandalized three times in five months. Everyone else has had the same issue we've talked to. The cops seem to really care less and can't be bothered with taking a report. So I think there is quite a bit of petty crime here in town, with more violent crimes being drug related.

To me, it is like living in a medium-bad neighborhood in New York, which is the only other urban area I've lived in and can use to compare/contrast. Honestly, we are looking to move from town asap. Not only because we are sick of having our car messed with, but also because we live across the street from two noisy nightclubs. Live and learn, right?!

All in all, after months of being ready to go back to the states, we are really starting to like it. After we find another apartment, we might even like it more. Best of luck to you in your adventure!
