*I have been offered a job in the USVI and I am considering relocating there, but I am concerned that a family member may contract Dengue Fever (Dandy Fever/ Bone Break Fever). Is that something that people in the USVI even think about? Is it a concern at all? The CDC website stated that it is a concern for all of the Carribean, but I thought I would like to hear from someone that actually resideds in the USVI.
Thank you.

Hello Edward,

It does exist here but not rampent or problematic, there are times of the year when you hear about it more in terms of preventative measures for mosquitos... like after this bout of rain we are having... there will more then likely be suggestions like empty out all stagnent water in empty flower pots, bowls, catchments outside... sweep up stagnent water that might be sitting in pools in cemented areas... ect. so we think about it in terms of lots rain bring mosquitos - so preventive measures... its not something we are overly concerned about.... Illnesses I or others I know have gotten here at some time or the other... the flu or cold is probally the top of the list, heat rash or rashes from playing in the sun too long or in the trees/grass or from mosquito bites is second... others are chicken pocks, ear infections, sun poisoning, mild conunctivitis to pink eye, allergies.... all things you could get back home too.

Thank you very much for the information. Probably like West Nile Virus is here - it exists, but nobody I know has ever become sick from it and nobody really worries about it.

My family's lived in the USVi since '79 on and off. We've crossed small bouts of ciguatera poisoning, which was my very own fault for shooting and eating a bigger sized 'cuda, but not once w/Dengue. Rumors always float around though and I suppose it is good to take certain precautions, very much the same as West Nile that you mentioned. Come on down, relocate.

I contracted Dengue Fever in St. Croix in 1989 after Hurricane Hugo. I hear there is sewage in the ocean again and mosquitos everywhere. I would be careful. I was really sick for two weeks but obviously did not die. It was like cholera sort of. YUK
