Well, it's about time to take the family in for a dental checkup. Can anyone in STX give me a good reference for a general Dentist?

I like Dr Richard Fraible (spelling?)---he's near the golden rock intersection. Seems to do good work, and reasonable.

Dr Fraebel at Golden Rock is good and I have also used Dr. Van Heckmann up at Beeston Hill

I've been to both Fraebel and Van Heckman in the past year. Here are my and my tardy, cell-phone-toting wife's experiences. We've only had routine cleaning and X-rays, so we can't speak to their expertise in other areas of dentistry.

Fraebel: $70 - $100 for routine cleaning and X-rays. Doctor and staff are business-like, no friendly chat. The office is showing its age with some rust and occasional dirt. Doctor's exam is brief. No problem if you're late. Cash or check only.

Van Heckman: $160 for routine cleaning and X-rays. Doctor and staff are a little friendlier. Facility seems cleaner and better maintained. Doctor's exam is a little more thorough, including oral cancer screening. Be on time, and turn off your cell phone, or the receptionist may put you on double secret probation. She'll give you a later appointment time without telling you, and you could sit in reception for a while, wondering why later patients are all going ahead of you. Cash, check or credit card.

I'd say it's a toss-up.
