I am looking for a dog training class for my newly aquired bush puppy! I have not had a dog in over 30 plus years and want her to be trained effectively. Is there a dog training class on STX that I could take her to, or I could attend to help me train her?

Aww, congratulations on your new pup! I'm sorry I can't answer your question about training classes, but I do know of a great book. It's called "The Power of Positive Dog Training," by Pat Miller, and you can get it for $9-10 on Amazon. We used it for our Chihuahua, and she's a very sweet, obedient dog. The book advocates against using pain or fear and shows you how to capture the behavior you want and reward it so your dog will continue to do that good behavior, whether it's coming when called or shaking your hand or whatever. Our dog doesn't know the word "no" because we never have to use it, and I think our relationship with her is strong because she never worries that we might hurt her or scare her.

Anyway, a training class would be great, but I think this book is a good supplement!

Good luck, and have fun!

There are currently puppy classes taught by Judith Kovach using Country Day School's facilities. I don't know the price, but you can call Judith at 277-8104 to inquire. Here's an article about her from the St. Croix Source: Dog About Town

Eric Ericson, former owner of Ye Feed Shop used to teach classes and, since he's now in realestate, my well be interested in teaching again. He works for Farchette and Hanley 340.773.4665 Ext. 115

Dog training is mostly people training, insofar as it's the person who must learn to recognize and understand the dog's behavior. You really can learn a lot from the right books. We recommend the monks of new skete books, and they have a dvd now.

SunnyCaribe, that's a good point. Cesar Milan (the "dog whisperer") says that he trains people and rehabilitates dogs. His show is worth watching for learning some things about how to interact with your dog, too.
