I see in the news that they are going to dump sewage out into the ocean at Long Reef AGAIN while they again work on the sewer lines.
I think that is should not be allowed. They should be made to pump the sewage into sewage trucks the type used to pump out cesspools, then they could pump it back in the system down line.
They should be fined tens of thousands of dollars a day when doing this, not by the VI government by by the federal government with the funds going to correct the action. Maybe this would prompt them to do something other than dump it in the ocean.
Yes this will cost the government more money, but it is a crime to pollute the ocean like this. It is one of our island treasures. What type of message does it send to the tourists and the young people when they can't swim in the ocean due to the pollution in our ocean. This does effect the local economy in many ways as well of the overall health of the people living near the dump site.

Don't they pump ALL the sewage way out into the ocean thru pipes? So I've been told.

This is a reprint from the Daily News that I read on line.

Princess Beach fails DPNR water quality tests
Saturday, April 25th 2009

St. Croix's Princess Beach, also known as Condo Row, did not meet the Department of Planning and Natural Resources' water quality standards in tests conducted this week.

The failure is a result of problems with the LBJ force main, which will be taken off-line for repairs and the sewage flow diverted over Long Reef. The force main line goes from the Christiansted areas to the Fig Tree Pump Station.

There may be an elevated health risk to anyone swimming in these areas as a result of increased concentrations of bacteria. DPNR advises the public not to use the beach until it meets standards and recommends that parents keep their children away from Princess Beach, as well as the area behind the Human Services Center and Department of Public Works and areas with manholes.

DPNR will continue to monitor the affected areas and waters. For more information, call the Division of Environmental Protection at 773-1082.

Sadly, this is nothing new. It seems to happen at least twice a year, if not more frequently, in the same area. They always pump the sewage out over Long Reef.

I called The US EPA Protection Division in St. Thomas (340-714-2333) and told them there was another discharge of raw sewage into Long Reef. The main man wasn't in today so I asked if DPNR or VIWMA has notified them. They didn't but know but were going to call to see what's going on.
This is unacceptable. There have been 3-4 discharges this year due to the faulty force main that goes through JFK. The fix a little section of pipe and it keeps breaking. WTF?

I'll make another call this PM and see what's up. If I get no info then I'll call the NY office (Region 2).

Share your outrage!!!! The Triathalon People are supposed to swim in Christiansted Harbour.

Oh those are the reported discharges............
I used to live in that area of long reef & it used to be EVERY SUNDAY they would pump raw sewage into the sea & claim it was an accidental breakage. We moved for 2 reasons.......#1 was this *ahem* accidental dump-age.....#2 we & our dogs became VERY ILL due to this! You would just wake up Sunday to the wondrous aroma of Human Crap............ahhhhhh paradise!

The EPA & SEA here are jokes!! I can not tell you how many times I've personally have called or showed up at the offices with complaints & evidence in tow, only to be told they can not do anything..............WTF!

Did anyone also read the article in the paper a couple days ago & the mention of 60% of our coral here is on the ENDANGERED list!
Wonder why.......hmmmmm.............raw sewage??? *-)

I talked to SEA and asked if they could look into it as well. Paul C. said he was all over it.

I will call that number Tuesday as well. Maybe if they get enough complaints they will act.

Paul C from SEA called back. A main broke in Catherines Rest and they are diverting the flow to LBJ. We dicussed lack of public notice and posting the beaches and wether VIWMA is or has ever reported these sewage flows to the EPA (US). He is going to talk with the Feds and the locals to be sure they are following the law.

Everyone should call the Fedral EPA at 340-714-2333 and express their outrage. If anyone else calls back with more info I'll post it.

I called today. The lady was very nice, said she was very aware of the problem as she had already received several calls.
I suggested my idea of the sewage trucks, that interested her as she said that would be cheaper than the fine they will impose, but I doubt anything will come of that.

KEEP CALLING THEM. IT CAN'T HURT AND MIGHT EVEN HELP!

Well with only six people seeming to care / commenting about this problem I guess this is why this goes on all of the time and won't stop anytime soon.

Terry, I hate to say it but you could have 1000 people call and it won't change a thing. Sorry but I have been here for 9 years and the sewage pumping has been going on that long, and probably for years and years and years prior to my coming here. I know everyone will jump on me and say I'm apathetic....so sorry...guess I'm feeling really DOWN today, due to the judge's suicide and also the suicide of Jaheem. And all the murders....etc. etc. etc.

North Shore west of Christiansted, also known as Condo Row.

I wonder if they are going to test the water quality at Providence Cay before the Triathalon?

I can see it now, Iron Man cancelled because of sewage in Christiansted Harbor.
