I'm 21 and live in Maryland. I've been really thinking about trying my hand at island life, but the only way I've ever made money has been firefighting or selling sunglasses....any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated...thanks, Jake

There are a couple of Sunglass Huts here. Firefighting may be hard to get into, as there is a lot of "it's not who you know, but who you know"-type stuff going on here.

Hello Jake,

What island are you interested in?

With experience in sales you could look into other shops, there are many (jewerly, electronics, souvenirs). There is also Pearle Vision & Sterling Optical (STT & STX) if your sunglass experience was more in an optical setting rather then straight retail.

I had spoken with a local firefighter on St. Thomas a few weeks ago to ask questions concerning firefighter jobs for another person. His thoughts were: With experience you would be welcomed, added that it saves the dept. the expenses of sending you off island to train. He said that there is a need for firefighters and suggested contacting Chief Potter, Milo Francis and/or Mr. Willams (I think he said Williams was a Lt. and that the order I listed them in is the chain of command.) He said that he was very sure the pay would be less then what you are making now (referencing firefighters in the states) but didn't specify a salary. He said if a firefighter is willing to take a paycut, he was sure their skills would be a welcomed addition. He said call the administrative office at (340)774-7610, send your resume and good luck. Just for reference, from the 2002 US Labor Bureau of Stats, the salary for Fire Fighters is listed as: Fire Fighters: Employed - 220; Mean Annual: $23,310.

Definately read through the information on this site, message board and pick up the Settlers Handbook if you haven't already (its available at the very top of this page) so you can learn about the islands and plan.
