What's the scoop on ophthalmologists on STX? Is there a Pearl Vision or something similar in case I lose a contact? General price for exam and lenses?

Hello Steve,

There is a Pearle Vision and also a Sterling Optical.

Dr. Anduze and Dr. Ombres are the only Ophthalmologist on St. Croix that come to mind.

General price for exam with optometrist last I had one was like $55 or $65. (That was on STT, but I believe the Pearle on St. Thomas is owned by the same folks on St. Croix so likely same price.) I don't know what the ophtalmologist exams run. Contacts range in price from like $25 for a box of soft disposables up to $250 for pair of gas permeable hard lenses. Bring a copy of your RX with you. Perhaps call Pearle and Sterling and get prices for your brand/RX and also to find out about the availability.

You can look up the listings in the yellow pages at http://www.viphonebook.com

If you actually need to see the ophthalmologist, plan on booking it 2 months in advance, waiting several hours after your appointment time and paying anywhere from $90-$160 for the visit. Dr. Ombres is good, but if you don't force your way past the receptionists to get to him, you won't ever get in.

One of my sons suffered a severe eye infection last fall and he had to be sent stateside for treatment due to the impossibility of getting past the front desk. Now I know the way to get in should another emergency strike. Do not take NO for an answer if you really need the doctor!

If you just need the optometrist, she is easy to see, very inexpensive, and very personable.
