Family making move to STT

I would love some advice and ideas regarding our upcoming move to St. Thomas in January. We are a family of four - including two young children.

The number of things to plan and consider is starting to overwhelm - so I have appreciated some of the comments I've read here so far.

Here are some other questions that I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on - any advice welcome!

SCHOOLS: Antilles School and All Saints are two schools recommended. Can anyone comment on their curriculum, programs, quality of teaching staff?

CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS: Are there activities and programs for children such as soccer and other sports, and music or arts programs?

MOVING STUFF: What to bring and what to get rid of? We are trying to keep it simple - but really struggling with which furniture to bring. For example - wood furniture - leather chairs - other materials that may not last well in the tropics? Beds/mattresses - buy them in St. Thomas?

Anything we should load up on if we are already shipping stuff. I am assuming that most everything is more expensive.

OTHER ADVICE:
Any other advice or thoughts on making a smooth transition?

Thanks and looking forward to getting there

Charlie: Antilles has lots of activities/programs, so does Montessori (although you didn't mention them! 😉 ) If you are not sure how long you are going to be here, would highly recommend leaving the big stuff behind and renting furnished until you are sure you want to commit.

Although I don't live there yet...lol, I will be moving to STX in November and then the family to follow in January.

I have found that the public school system is way below the average on the mainland.

The private schools all run about $9700 a year per student.

As far as us bringing furniture, we are putting everything in a storage for 6 months and will rent a furnished place to make sure the island life is right for us.

Here is a link of all the schools on St. Thomas:

Good Luck as I will need it also,

Dave

Thanks for the input. We know we will be making at least a 3-5 year commitment to move down and then play it by ear after that.

Yes - I am gathering that privates schools are the best bet - as in many places these days. Will check out Montessori as well - thanks East Ender.

Like you Dave - we have two boys 2 and 5 1/2 - so a little younger but very active.

Any other concerns or things I should consider about moving two young children to STT?

Thanks!

One of the keys to raising the lids it to make sure that you live in an area that they can feel comfortable in and that you can keep them busy.

What you bring depends on where you will live. I shipped a whole container down but I was finishing a house. I never regretted it.

Good luck

Dave: You are looking at the St Croix Montessori, charlie is asking about St Thomas. Here is the VI Montessori (St Thomas) site: http://www.vimontessori.com/about/intro.html

Thanks again for the insight! I will call VIMS on Monday as it looks interesting.

Has anyone - maybe William? shipped stuff from the westcoast or similar distance? If so - can anyone suggest a good shipping / moving company?

Hi Charlie,
I shipped my entire house and a car from Phoenix. We used Viking here on STT. They handled everything. They were great to work with. The contact is Don Collins. The phone number is 340-776-1536. I hope this helps.
