I am applying for a license to do business in St. Croix. The application has requested a document called a "Favorable Tax Clearance Letter." I have never lived in the Virgin Islands, therefore, I have never filed taxes. Can somone advise me on how I go about getting this document? Thank you in advance and see you soon.

Lulu: You have to go through the IRB (Internal Revenue Bureau) and you will have to tell them where you did file your taxes. They want to make sure that you don't owe the VI some money! You should also say what day you became a resident of the VI, because they will expect to get your taxes from then on.

East Ender, Thank you for your response. I will not be moving to St. Croix until mid-December. Do you know if there is a form I can get to apply for this letter? I have tried faxing (the website number is incorrect), I have attempted e-mailing but apparently the e-mail address is incorrect. The phone isn't working either but this may be due to the storm. I''m attempting to get my license in place before I move if this is possible. Lulu

Lulu: You may want to talk to someone who expedites business licenses.(Maybe someone on St Croix can give you names...) I can't imagine going through the process from afar. For one thing, I believe they ask for your physical address. For another, unless things have changed, someone needs to physically shepherd the paperwork through the bureaucracy. As you have noticed, phone and e-mail don't work so well with the government!! I am sure you are hoping that it is going to be painless, but I wouldn't hold my breath. ;-(

Hello,

The Business Application forms are available on the Dept. of Licensing and Consumer affairs web site

http://www.dlca.gov.vi/index.htm

You can go to

https://www.vimovingcenter.com/business_scene/

for contact info. Contact the IRB for details on the tax clearance letter. You want to call them and speak to someone... faxing & emailing isn't going to work. You fill out and submit to IRB a form that asks for information on type of business, social security numbers, names ect. and then you receive the letter or response within 10 days to 2 weeks.
