Federally Licensed Firearm Dealer on STX?

I have read some articles on gun laws in stx and was wondering if any one has shipped a firearm for home protection to stx through a federally licensed dealer? I understand that you have to register your firearm with the police station and get a permit for home protection before it is legal to have in your residence in stx. I do not want to stir any trouble here because I know many people are against owning a gun on the islands, but I am wondering if anyone has gone through this process. Thanks for any advice!

The St Croix Marksman Club would be a good place to start. The number listed in the ph. book is 340-773-8555

D&J Shooting Gallery is the only licensed dealer on St Croix. There are two numbers in the phone book for them. 340-713-9058 and 340-719-1996.

Have your stateside Federally licensed dealer contact them so they can exchange information. Then have your dealer ship your weapon to D&J. They will store it for you while you apply for your permit. I think they charge something like $50. You can use the weapon at D&J's range while it's being stored there.

After you arrive on STX go to the Firearms Bureau at the F'sted police station to get forms for your permit. You will need to take and pass the NRA handgun safety course. The course is given at D&J as well as the St Croix Marksman Club. After you turn in your forms expect to wait 7-10 days for approval. When you pick up your permit you'll be issued a "coupon". Bring the coupon to D&J to claim your weapon. If the weapon is already registered to you in the states that may be the end of the process. But sometimes you need to bring the weapon from D&J DIRECTLY TO THE POLICE STATION so they can confirm the model and serial number.

You cannot buy or possess ammunition until you have your permit. DO NOT ship ammunition down with your household belongings.

Good luck.

If you ever plan to use your weapon at a range you will need a Home Protection/Range permit to transport your weapon DIRECTLY TO AND FROM the range. You must belong to a shooting club in order to get that permit. Otherwise you'll get the simple Home Protection permit.

At home your weapon is supposed to be secured in a locked safe that is "bolted in place". Be sure to do that. Many weapons used here in crimes are stolen from their licensed homes. You could face liability charges if your stolen weapon is used in the commission of a crime and it wasn't properly secured when it was stolen.

Special K: D&J is not the ONLY licensed dealer....The Gunsmithy, Clayton Perry, is also licensed to sell. As a matter of fact, most of the police force on STT uses him....for weapons and ammo...clayton@viperry.com or 340-513-2529

As specialk says you need to secure your firearms and ammunition in a safe bolted to the floor. I doubt many people do, because there are many renters and I don't think many landlords would approve of a safe bolted to a floor. Unless the landlord already has one there. JMO

Any landlords on this site, what is your opinion? Would you approve from your renter if they asked to bolt a safe on your property?

Then some people wonder how/why there are illegal guns(some) are on the streets. Because it was stolen from you.

Does Clayton sell weapons and ammo or do you have to ship your gun to him? I would rather just buy one than have to go through all the shipping fun. Thanks.

Frankly I would not rent to someone with a gun, but I have a attached apartment. A landlord that did not live on site may feel different.

@Hiya
How would you know if you are renting to someone who has a gun or not?
Ask them? & actually think you are going to get a straight answer. Even if you have a tenant in, they can get a gun anytime during their lease. How are you ever going to know? Legal or illegal gun.

I still would like to hear from any landlords, if a tenant asked you if they can "bolt a safe" on your property. Would you let them?
Even if they say it is for their "so called valuables." & they paying for all the costs.

@Tommy B: Yes, he sells, as well. call him and ask for what you want and he can get it.
