Hunting around I found a very inexpensive flight from Newark to San Juan PR, less than half of the cost of flying directly to STT. Further hunting and I found a 2 hr ferry ride from San Juan to Charlotte Amalie for $100 round trip. Has anyone taken this? If so is it hard to get from the airport in SJ to the ferry?

Smartbomb: You do realize that the ferry runs every two weeks, right? I would just book a ticket on either Seaborne Airlines, Cape Air, American Eagle, or Caribbean Sun for the SJU-STT portion which should cost between $120 and $200 depending on availability of special fares or whatnot.

Matt: I believe he is talking about Newark, NJ, not Newark, DE which doesn't even have an international airport.

Smartbomb--I would suggest the non-stop from Newark to STT...we flew into PR last time and it was a nightmare..I wish we had paid the extra $100 for the non-stop flight...just a suggestion:)

Thanks all for the tips - I didn't realize the ferry only runs every two weeks. They didn't post the schedule on that website - only a phone number and the fare info. I'm going to call down today just to see what the current schedule is.

I don't disagree with you Laura, I prefer direct flights too. I wish it was only a $100 difference. The flight from Newark to SJ is $300 including taxes. The cheapest flight I can find to STT is $750, and that's an overnight flight leaving newark at 11:00 PM, getting to SJ at 2:30 AM with the connection to STT at 8:00 AM. Yuck!

With Jet Blue about to start operations out of Newark, flights to San Juan will become much easier for NJ residents. There is also some scuttlebut about Jet Blue possibly beginning operations to STX!!

if your trying to be frugal, I found a cheap option in taking a train from wherever to west palm beach, then flying out from there nonstop to stt or stx. the amtrak portion was 119 from cleveland to wpb checked 12/10. You might want to explore this option as well.

The San Juan flights have already started. I found a $59 one way flight to SJ on Jet blue. The only problem is the return flight is $299 🙁 Still checking. Last minute travel is usually expensive so I might have to pass on X-mas week.

I may have found a cheap route, though. $59 each way to SJ and then getting a connecting flight on Cape Air which is also cheap if booked ahead.

If Jet blue starts flights to STX I'll be all over it like white on snow ... which there is a lot of right now outside my window 🙁

I suggest you keep checking with Jet Blue...every time I've checked prices their rates are the best for regular bookings. AA occasionally has a sale, but Juet Blue is consistent.

For the SJU to STT leg I understand Caribbean Sun is the cheapest.

Have fun!!!
