My thanks to all who have answered previous questions for they have been very helpful. I have found that I can open my account in First Bank before I make my move so that is a great help and relief as I won't have to carry a lot of cash or travelers checks with me. I also found out that I can set up a local address with Mail Boxes ETC. This will help a whole lot also and so I think that my move will be without a lot of problems that I would have had without the imput of others who made the move before me. Thanks to your replies to my questions, and reading other messages on the board, all of you have helped me so very much. God bless all of you

John-
I will be moving to St. Thomas at the end of August. Can you give me advice on opening a bank acct? What are the minimum balances required, etc?

Thanks-
AMC

AMC,
I believe that John went to www.firstbankvi.com This is also where my husband and I opened an account. We did it in person on a pre move trip to St. Croix. We decided on First bank because it is FDIC insured (some aren't) and it had online banking. Anyhow, on the website there are directions to opening the account on line. It would only be a personal savings or checking I believe. Also, and correct me if I'm wrong John, you need to take care of getting an address in the VI first. John used his Mailboxes Etc address probably. We used our real estate agents address and she forwards our mail for us...

You are right Eve. You need a local address as your physical address but can have a different mailing address. I use my POBox in Texas for mail at this time. You can set up your local address thru Mail Boxes Etc and that will do fine. Good luck to all in your moves and I won't be too far behind you John
