Shauma stopped giving 10% discount to seniors, now only 5% as of 6/24/11. Yesterday 6/27 they were still at $3.699 but said gas prices will be dropping this week. They have no idea of how much prices will drop. In my mind it can't drop to where it should be for STX. For example; our daughter in Akron, Ohio bought regular unleaded gas this past Monday for $3.179/gallon. :S

Quote from VI Daily News on line @ 7pm Wed 6/29 --

The wholesale prices of regular gasoline and diesel fuel dropped 14 cents per gallon - to $3.09 per gallon for regular and $3.24 per gallon for diesel. The wholesale price of premium gasoline dropped to $3.31 per gallon, a reduction of 16 cents over the last week

Well a week has gone by since 6/27 when Hovensa reduced rack rate for regular gas to $3.09. As of noon today 7/4, still no change to any of the gas station prices that I have seen.. They still are at $3.689 (5 Corners), $3.699 (Shauma -5% discount) $3.709 (Roadrunner -5% discount),
$3.709 @ One Love, $3.799 @ Tide Village & LeRheine.

Positive thinking says these stations have not bought a new load of fuel yet Cynical thinking (which is more like reality) says so far our wonderful independent owners have pocketed the $.14/gallon savings if they bought a new load of regular plus the two stations that offered Sr discounts of 10% reduced discount to 5%. Gee isn't life grand!! (td)

Jumbie - I am thinking the same thing you are. Surely by Saturday one of these gas stations should have lowered their price! I had to buy some gas today and went to the one down by Golden Rock (is that One Love?) I asked the woman why prices haven't gone down yet since Hovensa lowered the rates on Monday and she SAID they were getting a load of gas tomorrow and that the price would go down. We'll see if that is the case.

Some gas stations must have bought cheaper gas in the past week. They just don't want to lower their prices. But as soon as one does, the rest should follow suit in order to stay competitive.

What is the senior discount? Is it an age or do you need to show an AARP card or something. I didn't know about this last winter and will be coming back in January. Thanks!

The VI government issues a senior card to those 60 years or older. You have to go apply for it and pay for it. I think it's $5.00. You need to be a resident, I'm pretty sure.

Doesn't mean you have to have the card to get a senior discount. Will probably just depend on the store or, in this case, the gas station attendant. My husband took his out of his wallet to show, but the lady didn't actually hold it. She might not have even asked. The station may also consider a different age to be a senior. It wouldn't be a set policy from one station to the next, but the VI senior card is pretty standard.

I went by the following gas stations on my way to The Buccaneer around 7:30am 7/11 and returned back west around 12:30pm 7/11. No change to any of the prices. Gee why am I not surprised - getting hosed by everybody these days :X- Hovensa, WAPA, & gas stations.

One Love (west of Avis building) still @ 3.709, Road Runner (east of Avis building) still $3.709, 5 Corners still @ 3.689, Budget Mini Mart in Golden Rock (by Metro Mtrs) still @ 3.799, Lionels in Golden Rock (by stop light @ Pueblo) still $3.799 and Tide Village (just east of Pearl B Larson Elementary) still $3.799. - Unless they changed somewhere else these stations are being tight fisted -no surprise.

The gas station in Whim was getting a delivery at 5:00pm today. The sign was still at $3.69. We shall see what the morning brings...

hey Jumbie - OK so I called One Love today and asked for the owner. The guy who answered the phone said he was the owner. I asked him why they haven't lowered their price since Hovensa lowered the rate Monday a week ago. He said that prior to last Monday's price decrease, that Hovensa had raised the price 2x in the previous 2 weeks and that the gas stations did not raise their price. So that now that the price is lowered, no one wants to lower their price since they didn't raise their price from the last 2 increases.

What's frustrating about this situation is there is no way to know if Hovensa raised their price 2x previous to last Monday, because they are NOT (to the best of my knowledge) publishing their rates on a weekly basis. I get the Avis every day except for Saturday and sometimes I get it on Saturday. For sure the rate is NOT being published on a weekly basis. So who the hell knows what's going on?

Anyway, the conversation with the owner of One Love actually went pretty well ie. I didn't seem to piss him off (too much) by asking him so many questions. He said that once 1 station lowers the price, the others will follow, and he "feels" that stations will lower their price today or tomorrow - despite what he told me about the previous 2 increases that they never made.

Yeah it seems that we are getting hosed all around.:X

These guys must think we're like the people in the Geico insurance commercial - live under a rock (aka clueless). The only source of info on Hovensa rack rate changes that I know is the VI Daily News. I found Hovensa has been changing prices weekly effective on Sunday or Monday of each week. I only listed rack rate prices for regular unleaded.

Monday June 7 - increased regular $.05/gallon to $3.24/gallon
Monday June 14. --regular remained unchanged from prior week- stayed @ $3.24/gallon
Monday June 21 - regular increased $.06 to $3.30/gallon
Monday June 27 - regular decreased $.14 to $3.16/gallon
Monday July 4 - regular decreased $.09 to $3.07/gallon

So the owner was blowing smoke up your chimney according to the VI Daily News. Starting June 7, there has been a total of $.11/gallon in increases but a total of $.23/gallon in decreases in past 2 weeks. That means the "owners" haven't decided yet to pass on any of their "savings". Since we can't really do anything about it --I will yell -- AARRGH!! :S

I say it is time for a co-op gas station. How many people would it take to put one together?

Thanks for the summary Jumbie! (tu)

I think I need to pay the extra quarter and get the DN every day instead of the Avis, for some real news and information. Hey it would be a great idea to send your post as a letter to the Avis! Would you do it, or would you like me to?

And if I have the energy, I'll call the owner of One Love back with this info and see how long it takes him to hang up on me when he realizes I know he was blowiing smoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ARRGH indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Let's see if the prices go down anytime soon.

islandjoan -- If you wouldn't mind you can send a letter to Avis. They do not publish the rack rates on a weekly basis like DN does. Also I saw I made a slight error on dates. Technically correcdt Monday's dates are: June 6, June 13, June 20, June 27, July 4.

Jumbie - yeah I just might write the letter. I'll just have to write it so that they actually publish it and then hopefully they'll also start publishing the rack rates every week. It doesn't look like anyone has lowered their price today - at least Gateway, Shuama and the other Sunny Island station haven't lowered their price yet.

I also noticed late Thursday late afternoon, that nobody in Sion Farm, Sunny Isle, Le Reine, or Capitol (Midland Rd intersection) had lowered prices. To me it's obvious collusion between this group of independent owners and our VI Gov't does nothing to discourage it. Too boot Shauma & Roadrunner reduced their 10% discounts for seniors to only 5% 3 weeks ago, which put "more profit" in their wallets.

After reading this post, I am amazed at how cheap gas is in the VI's. The lowest price in Key West right now is around $3.80+/gallon, and $3.65/gal in the upper keys. I just got back from Minneapolis and gas there was running $3.90/gal minimum.

Anyone know why Road Runner Gas station has been closed past few weeks? I came back from Ohio 7/22 and it was closed when I drove by on 7/23 and it's still closed. I guess giving 5% discount drove them out of business -:-o.

The Hovensa "bad guys" who decide gas prices to station owners are hard at work I see. Supposedly their weekly adjustment of rack rates was in order to better reflect what price of crude oil was doing and not cause so much sticker shock to motoring public. They raised prices whole time I was gone in July, including their .04 cent increase last week. This week they lowered regular by a whopping .01 cent/gallon. So the new rack rate to owners for regular gas is $3.41/gallon.

Oil has dropped on NYSE for past 10 days but Hovensa acts like crude is costing them closer to $140/barrel rather than reflect the mid $90/barrel on NYSE. Today it closed just above $92/barrel. Correspondingly the station owners are charging anywhere from $3.88/gallon to $3.99/gallon for regular unleaded on STX.
