I am a 28 yr. old Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Screenprinter, Advertising Entrepreneur, sometimes Bartender in Ohio and my wife and I (Stylist, Massage Therapist, Esthetician) fell in live with the islands (especially St. John) on our honeymoon. We have no romantic notions of a carefree life without work. We just want to move to paradise, that's all!!!

Any help on this topic is GREATLY appreciated.

Re: Graphics design employment. (following only applies to STT)

Like the mainland, 2 primary ways to go. Work for someone in which case there are 3-4 small ad agencies or several companies large enough to support a graphics person. Or work for yourself in which case any company needing communication skills is a possible client. A hybrid third choice is work part-time for someone and sign up and do clients' work on your day off.

Each requires a different mindset and, for me, a different set of risk/rewards. Bottom line: the skilled labor pool is very shallow. If you're good and you're willing to hustle, you'll be successful.

Can't give specific advice to your wife -- not too familiar with her industry. But I am guessing the above "words of wisdom" generally apply.

Good luck! Andrew

There are several graphic designers on St. John and they all seem to be extremely busy. I know a girl who worked here as a graphic designer for maybe two months, and she had many clients when she left island. I don't think it'd be hard to make money working in that field. As for your wife, she might have luck looking for a job at either Caneel or the Westin. Good luck!

I was taking a day trip to Buck Island on Big Beard a few weeks ago and talked with one of the very talented young ladies that worked on the boat. She said she came down on a 1/4 life crisis after working in Baltimore Maryland as a graphic designer in a major magazine with deadlines. She left and has been on the island (St. Croix) for over a year. She hasn't lined up a job with any other company but I don't know if she has been looking either. Go and ask her when you come down on your PMV. I cannot remember her name but just ask about backgrounds on Big Beard's boat.
