There seems to be a brush fire coming over the ridge from Teague Bay to Sierra Verde. Fire trucks responding. It's near a house that I can see, but not threatening it at the moment.

A lot of you seem to be in this general area, so heads up.

Yeah, that's probably the reason our electricity went out for a while at The Reef. Might have been started by a short or something on one of the poles?

We were driving to the end of Sierra Verde Road shortly after 6:00 PM and spotted the black smoke blowing over from the Reef side of the hill. I quickly called 911 and my call was answered on the first ring. I gave the operator my best guess as to where the fire was and she said fire units were on the way to investigate. The fire trucks arrived about two minutes later.

Also, a WAPA truck arrived in the area even before the first fire truck left.

Great response from both entities! (tu) (tu)

FYI to Dixiechick...I was ready to rush up the hill and save the chickens had the fire been at your place 😎

Power went out here too...but after or as a result of the fire. The power stuttered badly as it was going out--fingers crossed for the health of everyone's fridges!

We have a firebug. He's been caught by an angry mob once but never arrested or charged. Whenever there is a brush fire at the end of a dirt road just after a rain, I suspect our arsonist. The exact same thing happened 3 weeks ago at Castle Nugent. These fires seldom get going during the driest and most dangerous times and they seldom threaten property, or at least they always seem to originate in places where they are least likely to affect property.

And FYI the Heineken bottle refracting the sun's rays story is an urban legend.

Yeah, cable guy was hooking up cable at a neighbor's house. His bucket truck boom slammed into the pole and set off a vibration of the power wires, one broke and tripped the feeder fuse. I called both WAPA and 911. The wind was blowing east so I wasn't worried. WAPA drove up and down our hill 4 times. If the customer service asked me, I could have directed them to the location but all she said was, "they are coming. There is still a distribution line in our yard lying on the boat trailer. Maybe they will complete the repairs today.

All in all it was a good response by WAPA and the Fire Department. I still think WAPA should be privatized.

Can you verify that the downed powerlines actually started the fire?

I'm on the next ridge to the west and we saw flames cresting the ridge between us and the Reef a good 10 minutes or more before the power went out.

yes, the wire did cause the fire. the fire started after WAPA after turned the power back on at the feeder fuse.

(boy that got the remote out of his hand) thought the neighbors house on fire at first. called F.D. and they were on it. they checked several times during the night. Great job boys. thank god not a big old brush fire. the smoke stunk though.
