Anyone know where to get fire wood on St. Croix? I got a chimenea for Christmas, and we have pretty much cleared out our yard of all the loose branches, etc.
Thanks!

This brings up other related questions....is there any lcoal wood you shouldn't burn due to allergy or toxicity? Any vines clinging to wood you have to pay attention to?

i would imagine that you should not burn the Manchaneel tree branches. it's poisonous alive, i wouldn't want to inhale those fumes.

Oleander. Not a tree per se but in Florida, during the summer especially, I read in the paper/hear on the news someone taken to the hospital from using oleander limb to roast their hot dogs at the beach. Oleander can be toxic.

How about(dried) sea grape??
I don`t know how it burns,or if its bad for you but it is quite dense/heavy.
It grows everywhere, i just cut a huge one down here(drops leaves everywhere).

Seems to me that with all the trees that fell in Omar, there should be plenty of wood dumped somewhere on the island. I know I personally helped fill two dumpsters at Club St Croix the day after. I'll check with the grounds people to see where it was sent.

Sea Grape is a distant relative of the hibiscus...which is edible, so I imagine burning would not be a problem. Yes, Oleander is highly toxic.....one of the great ways to get rid of.....well, never you mind. Anyway, don't use it. Any hardwood should due nicely, and there are always dead branches in the rain forest that come down. I will keep you in mind for future years as I have a rather tree filled yard (some would say jungle!), and I often have to cut back large boughs. Also, many seed pods, such as the Flamboyant and other relatives of this family should burn long. I have perhaps several hundred per year that fall. Easy to store, and much better than going to a dump.

If it has white sap when fresh, don't burn it.

All the best,

Dan
