Eastender, if you read this I am still waiting to hear back from the department of education on a teaching position. I am trying to be stubborn. I called today and left a message for Joy Williams. To everyone else, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about firefighter positions on STX. My fiance is an EMT here in Colorado and when we relocate he hopes to stay in the same profeession (EMT/Firefighter). Any adivce would be helpful 🙂

Sabrina: I am thinking good thoughts for you, girl! One of the hardest thing around here is to get someone to return a call. That is one of the reasons I always talk about being on island first. Sometimes it takes (many) personal visits to the correct government office to get something done. I would call Joy Williams every day. Ask if there is someone else you need to call if you don't get any response.

The firefighters and EMTs are in two different organizations. EMS is through the Health Department: 713-8307 for St Croix. I don't know if it is the same over there, but on St Thomas, they work out of the hospital (which interestingly, is NOT under Health.) Also, the pay is not great. Fire Services is 773-8050.

Can you see why we have such a hard time attracting wonderful human beings such as you and your husband to the VI?? Hang tough.

I believe EMT positions are handled by the Department of Health. Information on such positions can be found by calling there at (340) 772-7331.

Try speaking to Alcess Lewis-Browne at the Departmemt of Education (773-1095), but as related in an earlier post, persistence will absolutely be the key to s[peaking with anyone there.

Eastender, Thanks so much for the reply. I will call everyday, beginning tomorrow. I will let you know what I find out. Over here, firefighter positions are done through the fire department. I will call the numbers you gave me. Thanks again 🙂

lip, my husband is not experience in a sense. Here before you can apply to the different fire departments, you have to go to college and obtain several differenct certificates that take about two years to get. He had to get EMT certified, HAZ-MAT certified, Firefighter I certified, CPR, and First Aid. All which might not "count" down there, but maybe it will help his chances. I had to add long distance minutes to my cell phone yesterday, so I will be calling fire services today. Thanks for the information! 🙂
