For the last coupla nights, I've had the VI version of fireflies in my yard. The last time I saw them was at Neltjeberg 3 years or so ago. Anyone know what they are? West Indian Fire Beetles? Cucujo Beetles?

We called them lightning bugs when we were kids. I see them occasiaonally here. Usually at higher elevations.

I don't think these are lightning bugs, Skys. These are larger, faster, brighter, and they stay lit longer. I think they are some form of click beetle.

Thanks for responding, Jeff. That's Pyrophorus noctilucus (Coleoptera: Elateridae), isn't it? That was my best guess 3 years ago. I only see them at night and they are way too fast to catch. I see beetles about 1-1/2 inches long flying during the day that I suspect might be them but, once again, they are plainly too fast to catch.
