I am graduating from college this April and after the summer I plan to move out on my own. I have always had something inside of me that wants to live on an island. I was hoping someone might have some suggestions on an inexpensive place I can stay for a few months to see if the USVIs are for me, before I make it my permanent home?
Thank you sooooo much!!!!!!!!!

Derek-

If you are in your early 20's, you probably want to go to STT...do you have the money to be able to stay alive while you decide if this is your place in the sun, or will you be job hunting? If so, in what field?

You gotta name an island, then maybe some of us can help...or your employment may determine which island you are on. Give us a little more info and the folks on this board are full of info. Lots of people rent out rooms short term (from a week to a few months) or studios and that would probably be the cheapest way for you to go if you want to live by yourself - otherwise, there are lots of singles your age doing the same thing you want to do - maybe you could hook up with one of them and split rent, etc.

Good luck!

I agree, if your young and looking for fun & adventure 'probably' StT is your place. Check with Ronnie at Villa Fairview - he helped us on a pre-move visit. He's a wonderful guy with a wealth of information. He usually reads this board, or you can find his web-site. Good Luck!

Thank you all for your reply!!!! I'm not so much looking for fun and adventure, but more like a peacefull and not-so-hectic lifestyle. As far as employment goes, I'm willing to do what ever it takes to survive. Any suggestions!?!??!
Thanks again for everything!!!!!!!!

Peaceful and laid back is St. Croix. It's also a bit less expensive than STT and STJ. There are a variety of jobs that can be filled by someone willing to do whatever it takes to pay the bills. What kind of degree are you getting from your time in college? Some skills and training are in high demand here and others are rarely requested in the islands.

Hello there. Although I have a posting for visitors, if you are planning on a short visit to get a handle on jobs, cost of living, culture, etc. on St. Croix, I do rent out a room that is private (separate from the rest of the house) with it's own patio, bathroom etc. (if you read the posting it will save my fingers a lot of typing).

I agree greatly with Alexandra that St. Croix is relatively reasonable in it's overall pricing index, and is very laid back. Of course there are the nightclubs, restaurants and all of that too, but if you are looking for a more subdued life, you can find many, many quiet spots to just 'be'.

I think STT is wonderful, but based on who I am rather than what I do, St. Croix was just a very logical place for me to live. I can always visit the other islands and enjoy what they have to offer as well.

Best wishes and please let me know if I can help in any way,

Dan

p.s. i heard in stt there is bar called igys ( good place to wrk?) and i heard in st john there's beachbar in wharfside village thats supposed to be lots of fun, any feedback?
