we are flying w/our 3 kitties, whom we must check as baggage b/c they're too big to fit in the cabin, on a flight from phila. to STT. we are making a connection through san juan. our bad for not buying a direct flight. has anyone ever flown a connecting flight w/pets checked as baggage? if so, were there any problems?

when i thought i would be travelling with my dog (it didn't end up happening), i was very worried and concerned that he'd not get the proper treatment (be left alone for long periods as the planes changed, not put in the shade, handled roughly) as i'm sure you are. so i opted to buy a 1 way ticket to San Juan on AA, then i purchased a ticket on a smaller carrier Cape Air where they remove the seat next to you and strap in the dog's carrier. I thought that would work best for me, since then I would be the one spending time with him for the 4 hr layover, rather than him sitting in some weird baggage area and me a nervous wreck. you might consider this option?

i've traveled around the globe with 2 dogs-having made several connections. my pups are my babies, so i understand your concerns. when i would check in at each stop i would let the airline employee know that i was traveling with my pets & ask about their whereabouts & current conditions. as you board the flight i also would let the flight attendant at the door know that i was traveling with pets & asked that they let me know when my pets were aboard. i was not shy about asking after my dogs & asked frequently. luckily, all went well through our many flights. good luck!

Celeste,
How big are your cats? We have a 15lb dog and a soft sided carrier which is like a duffel bag, it fits under the seat. Not all airlines allow you to carry on your pet, but if you could put two of them in one of the soft sides and the other in another and IF the airline let you bring them on as carry on lugguage you would be set.
Good Luck!
