Hi all!

Does anyone know where I would be able to locate information on how to go about establishing myself as a foster parent in the USVI (particularly St. Thomas) and how to go about finding children that are in need of foster homes?

Thanks!
(Have a great day!)

Kelsey

Kelsey: I am pretty sure you have to go through Dept of Human Services. I will try to get a contact for you today.

Okay, well...there is something you need to know about the government of the Virgin Islands and the internet...they are not very compatible. 😉 Very few departments have any kind of internet presence- Licensing and Consumer Affairs may be one of the few that have a website. So...you can call Human Services main number- 774-0930 and ask to be connected with the foster care program. You may not get anyone to call you back, though (another instance of government protocols.) If you are coming down as a student, I think you might want to wait until you are here, check things out in person.

Definately, I was just wondering about reimbursement and things of that nature. Sorry about the misunderstanding, I'm used ot the stateside way to do things-everything online so they tell you to go online instead of calling! lol, I was hoping to be able to see a listing of the children like the states have! Thanks so much for your help though!!!!

You will have to break that "on-line" habit! LOL

No pictures of children, I am very sure. Mostly children get taken in by family members- grandmothers especially. There are some foster families, I know. I don't know how they would feel about an "outsider", and a student (if you are old-fashioned typical student age) fostering children here, but it is worth a call. BTW, the easiest way to do business here is to go to the place in person and meet whoever you need to do business with.

Have no idea about STT, but CASA (Court Appointed Speical Advocates of the Virgin Islands) had a good article in today's Avis about the need for volunteers....

Phone 719-CASA or casavi.org There may be some info there, I haven't looked at it. At least you can help financially by buying Christmas cards or whatever through them - I did last year, and they were REALLY cute!
