I have read everything I can find on this topic but find a few lingering questions.
It appears the dumpsters are free, is this the case?
Does it cost to take larger item or any items to the dump?
Is yard waste disposal free and is burning it common?

Is anyone aware of the recycle plant? Do you have contact information?

Any and all answers are appreciated. I'm trying to be thorough.

The municipal dumpsters are free. This link should help:

http://www.viwma.org/business_information/solid_waste_2/landfill_operating_policies.aspx

Burning trash isn't permitted without a fire permit because of the hazard of brush fires. Most people toss "yard waste" as in plant debris into the bush where it rots very quickly. Or, of course, you can compost it along with your vegetable waste.

Maybe someone on STX knows the current status of the recycling efforts but this link from 2011 may be of help:

Thank you for the prompt reply and the links. It still seems like it is free to take garbage in. Almost too good to be true but I'm not complaining.

The recycling efforts seem to be on hold. Perhaps someone has any current efforts on the table? Not being able to recycle would be a really big hurdle for me. We came from Seattle originally and it is compulsory there. Something everyone is brought up with. Throwing recycle into the trash might cause at the least hives and the worst some kind of convulsion. 😀

I had to work hard to find the recycling spot here in Texas and we have to drive it in.

I agree it is psychically disturbing to throw aluminum cans and plastic bottles into the trash (solution: don't buy them). Recycling is one of those issues in the VI --like WAPA and the Senate -- that can make you crazy if you let it.

Like conserving water and electricity, producing less trash is a personal ecological effort, starting at the supermarket.

I compost all organic materials, and shred paper to use as a primary mulch in the landscape. You have to wet the shreds immediately so that they don't blow, and cover with decorative mulch as they are unsightly, but they do a stellar job of keeping tan tan away.

A fun site to check out: http://homesteadingsurvivalism.myshopify.com/ Some stuff off the wall, but interesting in a weird kind of way…

Loved the link Phizz, thanks. Do you know the scientific name for tan tan? I'm getting nothing trying to google it. I've heard about it quite a bit and would like to know more.
Thanks.

Desmanthus virgatus. Easily comes up on a google of "tan tan plant" along with photos.

I believe species called "Tan Tan" is leucaena leucocephala.

The one you mentioned OldTart has a brown stalk and does not take over like the leucaena leucocephala.

UNBELIEVABLE! 😮 I googled the scientific name Matt posted and lo and behold....it's the same weed we have been trying to get out of our yard for 5 years. It laughs in the face of every weed killer we've tried. It also adapts, it is low growing and goes sideways so mowing doesn't get rid of it.
We live in Brazoria County and the map shows us on it so it has to be the same one. It's pretty hard to confuse the foilage.

Thanks for the info.
