Hello
My name is Marjorie and I live in Port Perry , Ontario, Canada.
While you in St. Croix are enjoying lovely warm weather, we in Ontario are experiencing record breaking cold winter.
I am reseaching my Family Tree .Recently I found , on the British 1851 census, my 3x great grandmother. She was born in St. Croix, West indies in1783 (could be a year either side of that).

I am hoping that someone will be able to direct me on how I can find further information about her. Are birth records kept in one central location in St. Croix or are they kept in the individual churches still?

I know nothing more than her name and who she married in the U.K. She was shown on the census as being a British Subject but could have been naturalized aftershe or her family moved to England, where she married in 1810, London.

Her name was MARGARET GERTRUDE GARVAN HEITMAN - about 1783. I learned that St. Croix in 1783 was Danish and that her father could well have come from Denmark. I can't help wondering what the family were doing in St. Croix. The fact that they were there is new and very interesting news to me.

In anticipation of news from someone in St. Croix Thank you, Marjorie Wilson

Have you tried this site.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usvi/

There are list of colonist from the early 1600s - 1700s. Also has list of books and references and where to look. Might get leads there. Would imagine the archeives in Denmark would be the place to look. Although the local library in the USVI might have some historic records from this date as well.

In those days, the Danish West Indies were plantation islands... most families were there to own or run a sugar plantation, to be an indentured servent or a slave, or to be part of the military forces protecting this Danish colony. Also there were business people, traders, boat people, craftsmen/women, a few adventurers/pirates :-).

Try that web site listed to see if that helps any.
