A computer store can probably remove the drive and, if it isn't too bad, can back it up to another drive. I use PC Paradise. Good luck.

You can go to Office Max or Radio Shack and see if they sell a "drive caddy" that turns an internal hard drive into a USB drive. IF you have a laptop you need a 2.5" unit and if you have a desktop it's most likely a 3.5" unit. If the computer is newer than 3 years it will be a SATA drive otherwise it will be an IDE drive (they sell caddy's that do one, the other, or both). The easiest thing to do is take the drive out of the broken computer (it's just a few screws) and bring it in and look at the connector's etc. You can then just keep using the drive as a spare with your new computer!

In case you can't find one elsewhere, I got my last drive case (for 2.5 SATA) from Computer Solutions in Gallows bay.

Thanks all for the info. I'll try the Caddy approach and see.
