There have been many threads on this, including how to apply for and obtain a permit. Whether you need it or not is a hard question to answer (and an emotional/controversial topic to many) and seems to depend on your risk, such as if you regularly carry valuables to/from work (ie, jewelry store).

You can find more info by using the search function for this discussion board.

I know nothing about guns, so my having one would probably mean I'd shoot myself in the foot!!

We've been on STX for 5 years and I've never wished I had a gun. Except when we''re having a hard rain and I'm driving behind some idiot going 5 miles an hour.

The bad guys all have guns. If you think you might run into one of them or them into you, you might want protection. Too many good guys get shot here. The sentiment seems to be that the only good guys valuable enough to carry a concealed weapon are those who own businesses. Everyone else is on his own. That said, if you have street smarts and remain aware of your surroundings, you're pretty safe here. Guns for home protection are common, the process for getting a license to have one takes about a month and requires that you have 2 people on island who will vouch for you. The other threads have lots more info.
Cheers

You must be able to defend yourself and your home on this island. Unfortuantely we are not at a point where you can count on the cops being there, even being there 4 hours after the fact. That being said you really really have to read up on all the laws of what you can and cant to with guns here. For example if someone breaks into your home, you must retreat to the furtherest place from the door before you shoot. You must be able to prove you were trap and cornered to not get into trouble.

On a simular thought did anyone here about the three escaped prisoners this last week? One of the prisoners grilfriends who is a cop picked them up when they broke out. This is our police system.

The other problem I have heard, If you do shoot someone ( in my opinion. anyone who steals anything from me deserves to be shot ) you better leave the island. Their friends or relatives will likely be out for revenge. For that reason I don't have a gun there. I'll keep them all in AZ.

A useful book is "In the Gravest Extreme" by Ayoob. He tells you more about the aftermath of a shooting than other books and lets you realize the enormity of the responsibilty when you decide to become a citizen willing to protect yourself from the evil around. It is sobering but realistic.
