Hi, just wondering what's the healthcare like in ST? We might be moving there and I am wondering if it's set up like the states. We might have more kids while we are there so I guess I wonder about labor and delivery and also pediatricians.

Thanks! It's getting closer, we should know this week if we are moving or not...

I hope someone who has had a child on-island responds to your question b/c it is something that has been on my mind as well. My one experience at a clinic and at the Hospital on STT was a nightmare and I intend to avoid as much as possible seeking non-emergency medical attention here.
That said, people do have healthy babies here, so thay must be doing something right! smile. If you are interested in alternative birthing, i know that there are midwives, doulas, and they even have folks trained in water birthing.

Onika: The clinic AT the hospital is not part of the hospital, if that makes any sense. It is run by the Health department. I hope you didn't have problems at the hospital, because I hope you didn't have hospital needs!

Liz:They birth tons o' babies at RLS, and everyone I know has been very happy with that part of the health care system. When you ask if it is set up like Big America, what do you mean? We have a lot of the same kinds of services, Medicare, etc. There are many fewer insurance companies and health insurance is very expensive. Health care has been improving over the past few years since (1) the hospital became a semi-autonomous agency of the government and (2) we have had several wonderful new physicians open practices here.
