Hello,
A healthcare question, I have not found any reference to, so far.
Can anyone illuminate the situation regarding radiation therapy for cancer, if needed. Is anything going on in the USVI? or on Puerto Rico? or does one fly to Miami or Atlanta? I have seen specialists available, at least on one of the USVI. Any thoughts, from any point of view is helpful.

I wish to live on STX, but have a small problem too.

Thank you. Fran

Fran -

Welcome to the club of those of us with "small problems"....Here is a post on the new cancer center on STT, along with a name and contact number.

There is also a Radiation and Cancer Institute on Puerto Rico (787)774-5555.

If you would like to PM me, please feel free...I don't know how much help I can be, but it sounds like we have something in common.

Good morning everyone. I am the administrative Director of the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute here in St. Thomas. We have one of the most beautiful building, along with top of the line equipment for our institute. We had our dedication on January 17, 2006 with Dr. Freeman of the National Cancer Institute as our guest speaker. We will be "going live" with our first radiation treatment sometime in April if this year. In the meantime we will be transitioning our current chemo therapy patient to the center on or about the first of March.
Some of the services we will be offering will be: Radiation Therapy, Chemo therapy, Research and Clinical trails, a Patient Navigator Program, Tumor Registry, community education, screening and early detection, Nutrition services, Social and Pastorial counseling, and other related services not only to the Virgin Islands, but to other islands in the Caribbean as well.
Each month we highlight the awareness of a specific cancer, the highlight for last month was Cervical Cancer, February we skip, but continue to highlight general education, March is Colon and Kidney etc.

Please give us a call at 340-776-8311 X 2289,4441,4442 and we will be delighted to answer questions you may have. Until then .

Fran: As Becky explained, we do have the brand new Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute. They started radiation treatment in May, they have done chemo in the main hospital for some time. This and the new Cardiac Center on St Croix was the result of money from the huge class-action cigarette settlement of several years ago. Before this opening, people had to go to Puerto Rico.

See, things do change! 🙂

Excellent and fast information, thank you very kindly. I do enjoy reading relo message B. and always learn something useful. I do not post often, but my new 'small problem' became quite a motivator. The Kimelman Institute website has good information too.
Thank you again. Fran
